Phosphorus Removal from Municipal Wastewater Improves Water Quality in Local Ponds

Photon Water is helping the Czech town of Osečná to improve water quality in local ponds and water reservoirs.

Osečná is a small town located in the north of the Czech Republic, on the Ploučnice river. Local ponds and reservoirs situated downstream are affected by excessive growth of cyanobacteria and algae caused by water eutrophication - the over-enrichment of water with nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus.

Since the municipality operates its own wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), it has decided to reduce phosphorus concentrations during the wastewater treatment process. This would prevent the increase of phosphorus in surface waters resulting from the discharge of treated wastewater.

Phosphorus removal is not the primary function of a WWTP, so the municipality chose Photon Water to provide this service. We used our smart phosphorus precipitation system, which effectively reduced the volume of phosphorus to the limit values set for the operation of a biological wastewater treatment plant.

This success opened the door to another collaboration with the municipality. We are currently working on a lake management project to further improve water quality in the bodies of water managed by the municipality. This project will help ensure that both locals and visitors can enjoy clean, safe and healthy swimming water during the upcoming summer season.
